When I was planning my wedding, like most brides, I would search for wedding inspiration, ideas and tips on Pinterest. Thank God for Pinterest, am I right? One of the most common things that would pop up on my feed was "Questions to ask your Wedding Photographer". As many of you know, I love weddings. I still look at weddings on Pinterest, and not just because I am striving to be a full time wedding photographer, but also because I simply enjoy looking at weddings. So today I thought I should answer some of those questions for anyone who might be interested in my answers.
1. How long have you been in business?
I officially opening my photography business in June of 2015. To read more about how that came about check out my recent post, "5 Things I Learned My First Year of Photography".
2. How many weddings have you shot?
Within my first year of photography I have shot 9 weddings, 1 as the third photographer, 7 as the second photographer and one as the first photographer. I was once a bride and I know just how important having a well experienced photographer is. Being a wedding photographer can be hard to get into, you can't just jump right into it, and it is something I do not take lightly. I have learned a ton through these weddings and wedding photographers I have shot with and I cannot wait to shoot more and more.
3. How would you describe your working style?
I normally capture moments as they happen. To me it's better to actually capture what happening instead of trying to create scenes or moments. Now I also understand that sometimes people need direction or inspiration because they might be nervous in front of the camera. So during those times I will step in, but for the most part I'm in the background.
4. What type of equipment do you use?
Currently I own a Nikon D610, with 2 lenses, a 24-85 mm Zoom and a 50 mm. I also own an external flash for low light situations. As of right now I only shoot digital, but I do have a strong interest in film photography so that could be an option sometime in the future. I also consider myself a natural light photographer, so you won't see me carrying a bunch of heavy equipment with me, that's just not my style.
5. What is your editing style?
Um... let me see. I guess the best way I can describe it is natural with a touch of film. I experimented with many different styles, but I have always come back to the same thing. I love sharp, well lit photos with soft light and muted blacks. I keep it simple and I don't like changing colors too much, Not too much contrast, not too dramatic. To view a few examples click on the portfolio tab at the top of the page.
6. Are you the photographer that will shoot my wedding?
Yes. Occasionally, I will have someone tag along as my assistant and an extra shooter, but I will always be the main photographer.
7. Do you have backup equipment?
Every wedding, second shooter or no second shooter, I rent backup equipment. Eventually I will purchase another camera and my D610 will be my backup, but for now I rent backup gear.
8. Will you photograph other events on the same day as mine?
No, I book only one wedding per day.
9. What is your backup plan if you are unable to shoot my wedding for some reason?
If for some strange reason I can't make it I will find a replacement and if for an even stranger reason I couldn't find one, you will get a full refund. In other words, I'll be there!
10. Can I give you a list of specific shots I would like?
Sure. Absolutely.
11. Which venues are you familiar with?
I have shot weddings at Olde Dobbin Station, The Amish Barn at Edge, Ranch House Chapel and Lodge, The Veranda, 7F Lodge and Rock Lake Ranch. All beautiful venues!
12. What time will you arrive at the site and for how long will you shoot?
I will arrive about 30 minutes before my schedule starts to find the best places to take pictures and to meet other venders (wedding coordinator etc.). The timeframe will depend on the wedding package.
13. What packages do you offer?
I have 3 packages. For specifics click on prices then click on weddings.
14. Are digital images included in your packages?
For weddings digital images are included.
15. Can I print through you?
Yes! Along with your digital images you will receive an online gallery, to view and share, where you also have the option to purchase prints, canvases, albums etc.
16. How long after the wedding will I receive my photos?
Within 3 months you should be able to view your online gallery and receive your edited images on an USB.
17. Will I receive a written contract?
Yes! For every wedding there will be a contract signed. The contract will cover copyright information, my cancellation policy, deposit information etc.
18. How far in advance do I need to book you?
I prefer that you book me at least six months before the wedding day.
19. How much of a deposit do you require and when is it due?
The deposit depends on the package. To give you an idea it is less than half the total price. It is due when the contract is signed. The deposit is non refundable.
20. When is the remaining amount due?
The remaining amount, after the deposit, is due the day before the wedding.
Well there you go. Hopefully that answers some of your questions. If you would like to know anything else feel free to leave a comment. Happy Labor Day weekend!
